West Genesee captured a thrilling victory against Fayetteville-Manlius for the Section III Class ‘A’ Championships on Tuesday, May 28th. Fayetteville was predicted to win this game having an undefeated season and beating West Genesee (13-5) twice this year. These statistics do not prove it all.
The teams took the game into double overtime for a tough competition for the title, but West Genesee came out on top in the final minute of the 2OT. The teams were evenly matched throughout the game. West Genesee led the first quarter 2-1 but FM quickly returned the favor ending the half 2-2. As the third quarter commenced, the Wildcats again took the lead 4-3 but had reversed in the fourth quarter, when the Hornets led netting two goals themselves, only surrendering one, sending the match into overtime at 5-5.
The first overtime was unsuccessful for the two teams. The second overtime only got more aggressive but in the end the Wildcats came out on top due to the impressive partnership of West Genesee’s Ginestro and St. Croix. When St. Croix spotted Ginestro open, he fed the ball to his teammate and slid the ball passed the goalie to take the victory of 6-5.
West Genesee takes home the Championship win for their team and now looks forward to advancing to a state tournament against the Section IV winner on Saturday, June 1st.
