New York’s Class A Section III semifinals spewed with drama on Friday, May 24 in a game between West Genesee and Baldwinsville. After a well battled match, the West Genesee Wildcats pulled off the come-from-behind win in miraculous fashion.
The Wildcats started the game off hot, netting the only two goals of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the teams were even, each scoring three goals. The Baldwinsville Bees dominated the third quarter, shutting out West Genesee and marking three more goals.
Starting at 6-5 for Baldwinsville, the fourth quarter contained all of the drama. The Bees struck first to make a two goal deficit. The Wildcats tied the game at seven a piece with 3:15 left and then Ryan St. Croix scored his third goal of the game to give the Wildcats an 8-7 lead with only 1:50 remaining.
Not giving up, the Bees’ Ronnie Bertrand netted his fourth goal of the game to tie the game with only 26 seconds left. In the most crucial faceoff of the game, Wildcat Collin Kobuszewski won the draw and brought the ball downfield. After charging from the right side of the field, Brady Hoose beat his defender and fired a low shot through the legs of Baldwinsville goalie Parker Ferrigan to win the game 9-8 with only 3 seconds remaining.
West Genesee now advances to face Fayetteville-Manilus on Tuesday, May 28 in the Class A Section III final. Early this season, the Wildcats dropped a close 9-7 game to Fayetteville. Still, West Genesee will be playing to win, for as they just displayed, playoff competitions can be unpredictable and full of surprises.
